Vista Outdoor Chemical Engineer- CCI/Speer in Lewiston, Idaho

Job Description

Our Lewiston, ID location is seeking a Chemical Engineer to add to our team. The purpose of the Chemical Engineer is to assist in all phases of chemical technology, provide technical assistance in the production, transfer, storage, handling and processing of ammunition components, oversee development of chemical operations processes, and provide analytical and technical support for all departments as requested and/or scheduled. Understand chemical processes at all Lewiston factories to better serve production departments with process improvements and cost savings projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide analytical and engineering support regarding chemical problems faced in all departments and evaluates future operational improvements.

  • Provide technical assistance to operations and engineering staff.

  • Ammunition testing in a variety of firearms will be required at times.

  • Evaluates and observes chemical production activity to ensure guidelines are being followed regarding safety and quality and to implement changes in the process if necessary.

  • Insure that all EPA, EOS and DoD specifications protocols for procedures and processes are carried out within the group.

  • Oversee that development of procedures for chemical testing and evaluation are applicable to specific department needs.

  • Familiar with material hazards analysis including: impact, friction, electrostatic sensitivity; thermal stability; thin-film propagation; compatibility analysis.

  • Write reports as requested. Be familiar with preparing Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Production Process Specifications, Supplier Requirements, Engineering Notices, Hazards Analysis, Project Feasibility Evaluations, and Full Process Release Reviews as necessary for project completions.

  • Balance multiple projects across several departments while working with a variety of leaders and stakeholders.

  • Prepare budget and timetable for capital projects.

Qualifications

  • Requires BA/BS in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.

  • College chemistry including courses in Analytical, Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry.

  • A high level of communications & presentation skills.

  • Computer experience with MS Excel & MS Access.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

  • Electroplating experience preferred.

  • Experience with the chemical and mechanical processes involved in the production of ammunition.

  • Experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

  • Surface finish measurement.

  • Firearms and ammunition handloading experience.

  • Interest in outdoor activities and a desire to work in the Lewis-Clark valley.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION

Physical Requirements: Employee will be sitting, standing and walking the majority of the time. Minor lifting objects over 10 lbs, carrying, stooping, and kneeling to access books and reports, to transport paperwork and materials, and to retrieve files. Some work outdoors. Manual dexterity for extensive computer work and writing. Hearing, speaking and vision are required.

Mental Requirements: Must communicate effectively in verbal and written formats. Excellent analytical and conceptualization skills. Flexibility to effectively deal with a variety of people and situations and to handle interruptions and multiple tasks simultaneously. Quick thinking and problem solving to readily assimilate information. Ability to maintain tact and highly professional manners. Initiative to effectively complete tasks with little supervision. The ability to identify and appropriately handle confidential information.

Equipment Used: Telephone, calculator, personal computer, copy machine, fax machine and printer.

Working Environment: Work is done in both an office environment, and in the manufacturing plant. This exposure subjects incumbents to temperature changes, dirt, dust, noise, vibration, moving objects and mechanical parts, machine tool lubricant mists, equipment and explosive hazards. Co-worker support, guidance and reinforcement are readily available.
