Vista Outdoor Embedded Firmware Engineer in Hyde Park, Utah

Job Description

As an Embedded Software Engineer for Camp Chef, in the engineering group, you will use your skills to develop controllers for pellet grills. Responsibilities include all aspects of the design process from concept, software design, prototyping, hardware troubleshooting, testing, quality improvement, and product support. Camp Chef is focused on delivering industry leading and innovative solutions for the outdoor cooking industry.

The ideal candidate will have an advanced knowledge of microprocessors, WIFI modules, and the ability to program in Java, Python, and C/C++.

Camp Chef is a subsidiary of Vista Outdoor.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create documentation, flowcharts, and user guides for new and existing software programs.

  • Perform routine software maintenance.

  • Write, modify, and debug software, including development, integration, and support activities.

  • Actively participate in software development and automated unit testing

  • Work closely with outside suppliers to deliver prototypes on time and at cost that are aligned to business expectations.

  • Perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis on existing and future products.

  • Coordinate tasks with offshore suppliers with limited supervision.

  • Collaborate with other departments and engineering team members.

  • Designs, implements, and tests embedded firmware for hardware control and product user interfaces.


  • 3-5 years in real-time embedded software development in Java, Python, C/C++, and real-time OS’s (FreeRTOS).

  • Knowledge of common electronic components and able to read circuit design schematics.

  • Software debug and troubleshooting.

  • Experience with embedded system design principles and best practices.

  • Experience with embedded peripherals and interface busses such as I2C, I2S, SPI, USB, UART.

  • Experience with source code management and collaboration tools (Git, GitHub, Jira, Confluence)

  • Standard tools operation: Oscilloscope, multimeter, logic analyzer.

  • Experience using highly automated software development processes and modern tools.

  • Ability to read schematics and perform basic hardware debugging desired.

  • Familiar with ARM Cortex-M microprocessors and Espressif ESP32 WIFI modules.

  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting abilities.

  • Familiar with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and WiFi a plus but not required.


  • Bachelors Computer Science (CS), Computer Engineering (CE), or Electrical Engineering (EE preferred), or equivalent.

  • 3-5 years

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • On-Site: Hyde Park, UT

  • Employee will be sitting the majority of the time, with some walking and standing. Manual dexterity for extensive computer work and writing.

  • Work is done in an office environment. Co-worker support, guidance and reinforcement are readily available.


  • 10 hour shift (M-Th)
