Vista Outdoor Manufacturing Maintenance Mechanic - Weekend Nights - Federal Ammunition in Anoka, Minnesota

Job Description

Our Anoka, MN location, where Federal Ammunition is produced, is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic to add to our team. The Federal Ammunition location has a rich history in the community and has been operating since 1922.

Our Maintenance Mechanics maintain manufacturing operations through the performance of machine maintenance and troubleshooting in Pistol and other areas as needed. Perform basic machine shop and metal working processes such as operate manual mills, lathes, surface grinders, polish dies and sharpen knives. Other work as directed.

SHIFT Q: 7pm-7am Fri, Sat, Sun and every other Thurs + overtime as needed


  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively troubleshoot

  • Demonstrated above average craft or mechanical ability (carpentry, millwright, tinsmith, plumber)

  • Training and experience in a machine shop or knowledge of metal working machining and processes

  • Ability to operate surface grinder, polish dies and sharpen knives

  • Demonstrated effective written and interpersonal communication skills

  • Positive customer service attitude

  • Demonstrated leadership/organizational skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with a minimum of supervision

  • Ability to weld, braze, and solder all types of metals (steel, aluminum, etc…) with proficiency.

  • Ability to rivet

  • Experience grinding, filing, and threading metal

  • Basic welding skills


  • Electronic experience or education

  • Knowledge of/experience in pneumatics, hydraulics, welding

  • Tinsmith experience

  • Personal computer skills


  • Works independently with minimum supervision (self starter).

  • Does basic machine shop work - drilling, tapping, sawing, grinding.

  • Able to sketch simple parts and read basic blue prints.

  • Demonstrates above average mechanical ability, including troubleshooting skill and ability to identify source of process related problems.

  • Ability to get along and train other people that have a variety of skill levels.

  • Capable of doing all setups and changeovers on production equipment in the assigned area.

  • Able to use precision measuring instruments such as micrometer, caliper, and dial indicators.

  • Demonstrates leadership qualities in the areas of safety, personal discipline, and attitude.


Physical Requirements:

Majority of the time is spent identifying the problems that need repair by listening and talking with other associates. Frequent lifting up to 10 pounds with occasional lifting, pushing, and pulling of weights up to 50 pounds. Walking/Stooping/Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling required. Must have normal depth perception capability for operation of motorized cart.

Mental Requirements:

Reading and attention to detail required. Basic math required to read blueprints and working on lathe. Must be flexible and have the ability to cope with stress from multiple job assignments and deadlines, as well as constant interruptions.

Working Environment:

Incumbent subject to fumes, dirt, dust, mist and gases when in plant. Regular production floor work causes exposure to mechanical/electrical equipment hazards as well as burning material (welding). Some time spent doing maintenance outdoors, thus exposure to temperature changes. Approximately 50% of the time spent work with or around others.
